More and more infrastructure is now in place at the Bałtyk 2 and 3 offshore wind farms

All foundations for 100 turbines and the foundations for two offshore substations have been installed, 120 km of export cables have been laid, most of the onshore cable route has been completed, and advanced works have been carried out at the onshore substation near Ustka and the base in Łeba, which is close to completion. This reflects the progress made by the end of the third quarter of 2026 in the construction of the Equinor and Polenergia offshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 1.44 GW.

In the Baltic Sea, the final layout of the future Bałtyk 2 and 3 turbines can already be seen. These projects are among the largest offshore farms in Poland and will be capable of supplying electricity to up to 2 million households. They are expected to produce power for the first time in 2027, with full commissioning planned for 2028. From the beginning of May to the end of August, the foundations for all 100 turbines and two offshore substations were installed in the seabed. The work was carried out using, among others, the semi-submersible crane vessel Thialf, one of the largest of its kind in the world, measuring more than 200 by 88 metres, which operated in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea for the first time. Thialf will return to Poland to install the main components of the Bałtyk 2 and 3 offshore substations.

In the third quarter, major progress was also made at the landfall site. Four trenchless drillings were completed under the beach and dunes to protect the natural environment and landscape. The Bałtyk 2 export cables were then pulled through prepared HDPE-lined ducts. The full 120 km of export cables has now been installed and pulled into the prepared infrastructure. Work is currently underway to bury the cables in the seabed and secure them with rock protection. At the same time, other specialized vessels are installing 66 kV inter-array cables offshore. Similar work for the Bałtyk 3 farm is planned for 2027. Cable installation is also progressing onshore, with most sections of both the 220 kV and 400 kV lines already in place.

An important stage has been reached in the construction of onshore substations near Ustka. All four transformers – the key components of the substations – are now on site. Each has a capacity of 450 MVA and a weight of more than 350 tonnes. The first two, for Bałtyk 2, were installed earlier, while the remaining two, for Bałtyk 3, were delivered at the end of August. Their journey took place in several stages: from the production plant in Łódź to Szczecin by rail on a specialist 32-axle wagon, then by sea to Ustka, and finally by overnight road transport to the substation site. Further assembly and installation works are now underway, along with the installation of the systems needed for commissioning.

At the same time, the operations and maintenance base in Łeba is nearing completion. It will house the operations control center for the offshore wind farms being developed by Equinor and Polenergia. The base was built on the revitalised site of the former shipyard. It has already been supporting offshore works for several months and, once the farms are operational, it will support their day-to-day operations, creating new jobs and demand for services provided by local companies.

Bałtyk 2 and 3 is a joint investment of Norway's Equinor and the Polish Polenergia group, which will supply 1.44 GW of new capacity to the national system, increasing Poland's energy security.
